Glass treatment
Windscreen Coating Penang
Hard water spot removal followed by a hydrophobic glass coating. Above about 60 km/h, rain sheets off the windscreen without wipers — which in a Penang downpour is a genuine safety improvement, not a gimmick.
Glass is not smooth. Under magnification it is a porous surface, and in Penang two things exploit that porosity: dissolved minerals from hard water, and silicone from the car wash products used everywhere.
Why your wipers smear
If your wipers judder and leave a haze that catches oncoming headlights, the problem is almost never the wiper blades. It is a film of bonded mineral deposits and silicone on the glass surface. New blades on contaminated glass smear exactly the same way, which is why replacing them repeatedly never fixes it.
We remove that film mechanically with a cerium oxide compound and a rotary machine — the same process used to polish out light glass scratches. Only once the glass is chemically clean and truly smooth will a coating bond to it.
What the coating does
A glass coating creates a hydrophobic layer with a contact angle above 100°. Below about 60 km/h you will still use wipers, but they clear water instantly with no juddering. Above 60 km/h, airflow strips the beads off the screen and you can often drive without wipers at all.
In a heavy Penang afternoon downpour — where wipers on maximum still cannot keep up — that difference in visibility genuinely matters. It is the cheapest safety-relevant upgrade on this site.
Night driving and the haze
The other benefit is night glare. Contaminated glass scatters oncoming headlights into a starburst. Clean, coated glass does not. Owners who drive the coastal road or the expressway at night notice this immediately.

Scope of work
What's included
Glass inspection
Assessment of watermark severity, existing chips or cracks, and whether wiper scoring is present. Chips are flagged before any machine work.
Deep clean and degrease
Removal of surface grime, old rain-repellent products, and silicone residue from previous washes.
Hard water spot removal
Cerium oxide compound on a rotary polisher to remove bonded mineral deposits and light etching. This is the stage that actually fixes wiper smearing.
Rinse and inspection
Compound residue flushed completely and glass inspected wet and dry for remaining deposits.
Panel wipe
IPA wipe so the coating bonds to bare glass rather than to polishing residue.
Hydrophobic coating application
Applied in overlapping passes, then levelled. Windscreen as standard; side and rear glass available as an upgrade.
Cure and wiper check
Coating left to cure, then wiper blades inspected and cleaned — old blades with embedded grit will score fresh coating.
Answers
Windscreen Coating — questions we get asked
How long does windscreen coating last?
About 9 to 12 months on a windscreen, and 18 to 24 months on side and rear glass. The windscreen wears faster because wiper blades physically abrade the coating with every pass. Anyone claiming a multi-year windscreen coating is either not accounting for wiper wear or is quoting side-glass figures.
Will it remove scratches from my windscreen?
Light wiper scoring and superficial marks, often yes. Deeper scratches you can feel with a fingernail, no — removing those requires taking away enough glass to create optical distortion, which is unsafe on a windscreen. We assess this at inspection and tell you honestly which category yours falls into.
Can you fix chips or cracks?
We do not do chip repair or replacement. If we find a chip during inspection we will flag it and recommend you have it repaired first, because polishing and wiper pressure over a chip can propagate it into a crack. Once repaired, we are happy to coat the screen.
Is this the same as the rain repellent I can buy at Tesco?
Different in preparation and durability. A consumer rain repellent is a wipe-on silicone that sits on whatever is already on the glass — including the mineral film causing your smearing — and lasts four to eight weeks. Our process removes that film mechanically first, then bonds a coating to clean glass. The prep is most of the value.
Do you coat the side and rear glass too?
Yes, as an upgrade. It is worth doing on the front side windows in particular, because that is where side-mirror visibility is lost in heavy rain. Side and rear glass coatings also last twice as long since no wiper touches them.
