Care & maintenance
How to Maintain a Ceramic Coating in Malaysia
A coating is not maintenance-free; it is maintenance-easy. Get the first seven days right and the wash routine right, and you will double the service life of what you paid for.
Key takeaways
- First 7 days: no washing, no chemicals, no rain-water left to dry. Rinse with plain water and dry if it rains.
- Wash every 2–3 weeks with pH-neutral shampoo and the two-bucket method. Never an automatic brush wash.
- Remove bird droppings within hours — at pH 3–4.5 on a hot panel they will etch through a coating.
- Decontaminate every 6 months and top up the sacrificial layer every 3–4 months with a SiO₂ spray.
The first seven days decide a lot
Cross-linking continues for roughly a week after application. During that window the coating is chemically vulnerable in a way it never will be again.
- No washing at all. No shampoo, no quick detailer, no waterless wash, no wipe-downs.
- Do not let rainwater dry on the car. Rain is unavoidable in Penang. If the car gets wet, rinse with plain water and dry it with a clean microfibre towel when you get home. Water left to evaporate in this window leaves mineral deposits in the curing coating.
- Avoid parking under trees. Sap and droppings during cure are far more damaging than they will be later.
- No pressure washing, no chemicals of any kind.
Driving is fine after 24 hours. It is standing water and chemistry you are avoiding, not motion.
The wash routine, step by step
Every 2–3 weeks. Roughly 40 minutes on a coated car.
Never in direct sun
Early morning or late afternoon, or in shade. Shampoo drying on a hot panel leaves streaks and forces you to redo sections, which means more contact and more marring.
Wheels first, always
Separate bucket, separate mitt, separate brushes. Brake dust is iron and it is abrasive — one wheel wipe onto a body panel puts a scratch in your coating.
Pre-rinse and foam
Rinse top to bottom to remove loose grit, then apply a pH-neutral snow foam and let it dwell 5–10 minutes. Most wash scratches occur in the first thirty seconds of contact; foam exists to reduce how much grit is still there when you touch the paint.
Two-bucket contact wash
Two buckets with grit guards — one shampoo, one plain rinse water. Load the mitt in the shampoo bucket, wash one panel in straight lines (not circles), then rinse the mitt thoroughly in the rinse bucket before reloading. Work top to bottom, leaving lower panels and sills last. If the mitt hits the ground, it is done — get another one.
Rinse and dry properly
Free-flowing rinse without a nozzle causes water to sheet off a coated car and takes most of it with it. Blow out mirrors, door shuts and badge recesses with a filtered blower, then lay a plush drying towel on the panel and lift it — never drag. Add a drying aid or SiO₂ spray for lubrication.
Products that quietly destroy coatings
Every three to four months: renew the top layer
A SiO₂ spray sealant designed as a coating topper takes fifteen minutes and costs about RM60 a bottle that lasts a year. Spray onto a clean wet or dry panel, spread with a microfibre, buff off with a second. It replaces the sacrificial molecular layers that abrade away from washing, and it restores water behaviour to near-new.
This one habit adds a year or more to a coating's service life. It is the highest-return maintenance action available to you.
Every six months: decontaminate
A coating resists contamination; it does not prevent it. Iron particles from brake dust and, on the mainland, industrial fallout still land and embed. Left alone they oxidise and pit the coating from within.
- Wash the car normally.
- Spray an iron fallout remover across paint and wheels, let it dwell until it bleeds purple, and rinse thoroughly.
- Feel the paint. If it still has any texture, use a fine-grade clay mitt with plenty of lubricant — but only where needed, and gently, since aggressive claying abrades coating.
- Follow with your SiO₂ topper.
Or bring it in — a maintenance detail covers all of this and takes half a day.
Penang-specific problems and what to do
Bird droppings
pH 3–4.5, and on a 65°C panel they can etch through a coating in under two hours. Keep a bottle of quick detailer and a microfibre in the boot. Spray generously, let it soften for thirty seconds, then lift — do not wipe a dry dropping, because the grit in it will scratch.
Hard water spots
Common on the island where tap water is mineral-rich. If you wash at home and let the car air dry, you are depositing minerals every time. Always dry the car. If spots have already formed, a dedicated water spot remover works — start with the least aggressive option.
Salt aerosol
If you park near the water — Tanjung Bungah, Batu Ferringhi, Gurney, the channel side of George Town — rinse the car with plain water weekly even when you are not doing a full wash. Salt is hygroscopic and holds moisture against the coating continuously.
Rainy season
During heavy months, rinse and dry after significant rain rather than waiting for wash day. Rain here is not clean water, and letting it evaporate on the panel is what creates the mineral rings people mistake for coating failure.

Questions on this topic
How often should I wash a ceramic coated car in Malaysia?
Every two to three weeks with a pH-neutral shampoo and the two-bucket method. More often if you park under trees or near the coast. The coating makes each wash faster, but it does not reduce how often contaminants land on the car — and leaving them to bake is what shortens coating life.
Can I use a pressure washer on a coated car?
Yes, at a sensible distance — 30 cm or more — and with a wide fan tip rather than a pencil jet. Do not hold a narrow jet close to panel edges, badges, or any PPF or wrap seams. A pressure washer is excellent for the pre-rinse; it is the contact stage where damage happens.
What happens if I take a coated car through an automatic wash?
The rotating brushes carry grit from every car that went through before yours, and they will put fine scratches through the coating and into the clear coat. One pass does more damage than a year of correct hand washing. If you must use a coin-op, use it for the pre-rinse only and never the brush.
Do I still need to wax a ceramic coated car?
No — and you should not. Traditional wax sits on top of the coating, blocks its hydrophobic function, and traps dirt. If you want to boost water behaviour, use a SiO₂ spray sealant made as a coating topper. It bonds with the coating chemistry rather than smothering it.
