Interior detailing in Malaysia is a different job to interior detailing in a dry climate, and the reason is mould.
Penang sits at roughly 80% relative humidity year-round. A car parked outdoors heats to 55–60°C in the afternoon, then cools overnight. Moisture in the cabin air condenses on cool surfaces and soaks into fabric, foam and the evaporator core. That is the ideal environment for mould and bacteria, and it is why so many cars here develop a musty smell that reappears within days of an air freshener being hung up.
Masking the smell does not remove the cause
Fragrance treatments, ozone bombs and cabin sprays address the symptom. The organic matter is still in the seat foam and the aircon system. We use hot steam extraction — 140°C+ at the nozzle — which kills organisms and lifts residue out of the foam rather than pushing it deeper, followed by an anti-fungal treatment through the aircon system and onto fabric surfaces.
Leather in a tropical climate
UV and heat are as hard on leather as they are on paint. Untreated automotive leather in Penang dries, loses plasticiser, and cracks along the seat bolsters — usually the driver's side outer bolster first, because that is where you slide across every day.
We clean with a pH-balanced leather cleaner and a soft brush to lift dirt out of the grain, then condition with a product that restores plasticiser and adds UV protection. On badly dried leather this is restorative, not cosmetic. It cannot repair a crack that has already split the topcoat, but it prevents the next one.

Full removal and deep vacuum
Mats out, seats moved through full travel, seat rails, under-seat areas, boot and spare wheel well. Compressed air first to lift grit from crevices.
Fabric steam extraction
Hot water extraction on seats, carpets and mats. Lifts soiling out of the foam rather than driving it deeper, and kills bacteria and mould spores thermally.
Leather clean and condition
pH-balanced cleaner worked in with a soft brush to lift dirt from the grain, then a conditioner that restores plasticiser and adds UV protection.
Headliner treatment
Careful low-moisture cleaning. Headliners are foam-backed and glued; oversaturating one causes sagging that only a re-trim fixes.
Dashboard, console and door cards
All hard surfaces cleaned and treated with a non-greasy matte UV protectant. No shiny dashboards, no windscreen glare.
Air vents and aircon system
Vents cleared with detail brushes and compressed air, then an anti-fungal treatment introduced through the system to address the evaporator core.
Interior glass
Inside of all glass cleaned to remove the plasticiser haze that builds up from dashboard off-gassing and causes night-time glare.
Anti-fungal and odour treatment
Applied to fabric, carpet and the ventilation system. Targets the source rather than masking it with fragrance.
Fabric or leather protection (optional)
A protective treatment on fabric that makes spills bead and lift, or an extra protective layer on leather.

Can you remove the musty smell from my aircon?
In most cases, yes. The smell is almost always mould and bacteria on the evaporator core and in the cabin fabric. We treat both: anti-fungal introduced through the ventilation system to reach the evaporator, plus steam extraction of the fabric that holds the organic residue. If the cabin filter is old it must be replaced too or the smell returns within weeks.
The exception is a blocked evaporator drain, which lets water pool in the housing. That is a mechanical fix, and we will tell you if we suspect it.
Will steam cleaning damage my leather seats?
No, because we do not steam leather. Steam extraction is for fabric and carpet. Leather is cleaned with a pH-balanced cleaner and soft brush, then conditioned. Applying steam to automotive leather can lift the topcoat and dry the hide — anyone offering to steam clean your leather seats should be politely declined.
How long does interior detailing take?
A full interior detail is a same-day service, typically 5 to 7 hours. Fabric needs to dry fully before we hand the car back, so we run extraction early and use air movers. Heavily soiled interiors — pet hair, mould, smoke odour, child spills over years — can run into a second day.
Can you remove pet hair and cigarette smell?
Pet hair, yes — it is laborious but it comes out with rubber pet-hair tools and repeated extraction. Cigarette odour is harder because tar penetrates the headliner, which cannot be aggressively cleaned without damaging it. We can significantly reduce it and often eliminate it, but on a car smoked in daily for years we will set that expectation before quoting rather than after.
Is fabric protection worth it?
For family cars, yes. It makes spills bead on the surface long enough to blot instead of soaking into the foam, and it makes future cleaning considerably easier. On a car with leather throughout and no children, it is not necessary — the leather conditioning matters far more.
