Ceramic Coating vs PPF: Which One Does Your Car Actually Need?

They are sold as competitors. They are not. One is chemical protection, one is physical protection, and choosing wrongly costs you either money or your bonnet.

This is the question we field more than any other, and it is almost always framed wrongly. People ask which is better. That is like asking whether a raincoat is better than sunscreen.

Here is the distinction that resolves it: a ceramic coating protects your paint from chemistry. PPF protects your paint from physics.

What each one physically is

A ceramic coating is a liquid — mostly silicon dioxide with various carrier solvents and additives — that you apply to clear coat, level, and allow to cross-link into a hard transparent film. Cured, it measures 2 to 4 microns. For scale, a human hair is around 70 microns. You could scratch through a ceramic coating with a fingernail.

PPF is a pre-formed sheet of aliphatic thermoplastic polyurethane, typically 150 to 200 microns, with a pressure-sensitive adhesive on one side and an elastomeric topcoat on the other. It is roughly fifty times thicker than a coating and it behaves like a shock absorber: a stone strikes the film, the film deforms, and the energy dissipates before it reaches the paint.

That thickness difference is the entire story. Everything else follows from it.

Ceramic coating fails at impact

No coating stops a stone chip. Not 9H, not 10H, not graphene, not any thickness of any coating anyone will sell you. The marketing around "9H hardness" exploits a genuine confusion: 9H is a pencil hardness rating for a cured film's resistance to scratching, on a scale that tops out at 9H. It has nothing to do with the Mohs mineral scale, and nothing at all to do with impact resistance.

If a workshop tells you a coating will protect against stone chips, they are either misinformed or misleading you. Either way, question everything else they say.

PPF fails at maintenance experience

Bare PPF is not especially hydrophobic. Water sits on it in flat sheets rather than beading, and it holds dirt more readily than coated paint. On a car that lives in Penang, that means water spotting on the film and more effort per wash. This is why serious PPF installs are almost always coated on top — a ceramic coating applied over the film gives you the impact protection of PPF and the hydrophobic behaviour of a coating.

Both fail on bad preparation

Both products are optically clear. Both lock in whatever is underneath them. A swirl mark under a coating is a swirl mark for two to four years. A tar spot under PPF is a permanent bump for five to ten. Paint correction before either product is not an upsell; it is the job.

Deciding by threat, not by product

Stop asking which product is better and start by identifying what is actually damaging your car. In ten years of working on Penang cars, the damage falls into four patterns.

Pattern 1 — Expressway commuter

You cross the bridge daily or run the North–South Expressway regularly. Your bonnet, bumper and mirrors accumulate stone chips. The rest of the car is fine.

Answer: front-end PPF kit, roughly RM2,600–3,800. A coating will not help you at all with this problem. Add a coating over the whole car afterwards if budget allows.

Pattern 2 — Street parker

The car sleeps outdoors, often under trees. You are fighting bird droppings, tree sap, rain marks and salt. There are etch marks on horizontal panels.

Answer: ceramic coating, or graphene if the car is dark. This is exactly the threat a coating is designed for. PPF would be an expensive way to solve a chemical problem.

Pattern 3 — New car, keeping it long term

Fresh delivery, and you intend to own it eight years or more, or resale value matters.

Answer: front-end or high-impact PPF plus full-car ceramic coating. Roughly RM4,500–7,000 combined on a sedan. Do it in the first month while the paint is perfect and correction is minimal.

Pattern 4 — Older car you want to look good

Five years old or more, swirls and dullness, but you are not chasing showroom condition.

Answer: two-stage correction plus a two-layer ceramic coating. The correction does most of the visual work; the coating protects the result. PPF on an older car with imperfect paint rarely justifies its cost.

The money question

Full-body PPF on a sedan runs RM9,000 to RM18,000. A full ceramic coating runs RM1,280 to RM4,200. That is a 4–10x difference, and it is the reason the decision matters.

The way to think about it is replacement cost. If a stone chip on your bonnet means a RM1,200 respray on a common colour, spending RM12,000 to prevent it is poor arithmetic. If your car has a three-stage pearl finish where a bonnet respray costs RM6,000 and will never quite match under sunlight, PPF pays for itself on the first chip.

The honest default for most Penang cars: front-end PPF plus full-car ceramic coating. It covers the panel that gets 80% of the impact damage and the chemistry that attacks the other 80% of the car — at roughly a third of full-body PPF cost.

What about "ceramic PPF" and hybrid products?

Some films now ship with a ceramic-infused topcoat, which improves hydrophobics compared to bare film. It is a genuine improvement and worth having. It does not eliminate the case for a separate coating over the top, and the marketing sometimes implies you are getting both products in one. You are getting film with a better topcoat.

Be equally sceptical of anything marketed as "liquid PPF". There is no liquid that cures into 150 microns of impact-absorbing film. It is a coating with an aggressive name.

Questions to ask any Penang workshop

  1. "Is correction included, and how many stages?" The most common way a low quote becomes a high invoice.
  2. "Do you wrap PPF edges or cut them on the panel?" Wrapped edges are invisible and cannot lift. Cut edges are the mark of a rushed install.
  3. "How long is the car with you, and where does it cure?" Under six hours means no real correction. Curing outdoors is not curing.
  4. "Can I see the warranty document before I pay?" If it does not exist on paper, it does not exist.
  5. "What happens at 12 months?" A workshop with no inspection process has no interest in how the job ages.

Can you apply ceramic coating on top of PPF?

Yes, and we recommend it on almost every PPF job. Bare film is not very hydrophobic and will water-spot in Penang conditions. A coating over the film gives you impact protection underneath and a slick, easy-to-wash surface on top. It also protects the film's topcoat from staining, which extends the film's usable life.

Which is better value for money in Malaysia?

For most owners, ceramic coating — because the threats that damage Malaysian paint most often are chemical, not physical. Bird droppings, acid rain, water spots and UV account for far more paint damage here than stone chips. PPF becomes better value when your mileage is high, your paint is expensive to replicate, or you intend to keep the car a decade.

Is PPF worth it on a Proton or Perodua?

A full-body wrap is hard to justify when a bonnet respray is affordable. A front-end kit at RM2,600 can still make sense if you commute long distances and want to protect resale value — a chip-free bonnet is visible to any buyer. For most owners of budget-segment cars, a good coating plus disciplined washing is the better allocation.

How do I know if my existing coating has failed?

Watch the water. A functioning coating pulls rain into tight, high beads that run off quickly. A failed one lets water lie in flat, wide puddles that dry into mineral rings. If washing has started taking noticeably longer and dirt clings, the coating's hydrophobic layer is gone even if the base layer remains. A top-up usually restores it — full removal is only needed if the base has failed too.
