Car Coating Price in Penang: The 2026 Guide

Search for car coating prices in Penang and you will find quotes from RM299 to RM4,500 for what appears to be the same service. Both ends of that range exist and both are, in a narrow sense, honest. They are just not the same job.

Where the money actually goes

Here is the breakdown that most workshops will not show you, for a mid-range RM1,880 ceramic job on a sedan.

• Coating product: RM280–450. A 30–50 ml bottle of certified professional coating, enough for a full car with layers.
• Consumables: RM120–200. Pads, compounds, microfibre, clay, iron remover, tape, IPA, applicators.
• Labour: RM900–1,200. Sixteen to twenty-two skilled hours across decontamination, correction, application and inspection.
• Bay time: RM150–250. Two to three days of sealed bay occupancy, IR curing, and lighting.
• Warranty provision and overhead: the remainder.

Notice that the product is roughly 15–20% of the total. This is why "which brand of coating do you use" is a much less useful question than "how many hours will my car be with you".

The four things that move your quote

1. Paint condition — by far the biggest factor

A two-year-old garaged car needing a single-stage polish and a five-year-old street-parked car needing three stages differ by 12 to 18 hours of labour. On a workshop rate, that is RM800–1,400 of difference before a drop of coating is applied.

This is also why nobody honest quotes a firm coating price over the phone. We can give you a range from photos; we cannot give you a number until we have looked at the paint under inspection light.

2. Vehicle size

A seven-seat MPV has roughly 40–45% more painted surface than a hatchback, and considerably more awkward geometry — sliding door tracks, high roof, large glass. Expect 30–45% above sedan pricing.

3. Paint colour and finish

Solid black and dark metallics show every defect and every polishing error, so they take longer and demand a finer finishing stage. Soft Japanese clear coats mark easily and need gentler, slower work. Matte and satin finishes require entirely different products. Expect 10–25% above the base rate for black and for specialist finishes.

4. Coverage

Door jambs, engine bay, boot shuts, wheel barrels, calipers, glass and interior are each additional. A "full car coating" that includes none of these is not wrong — it is just less coverage than you may have assumed. Get the inclusions in writing.

Why the RM399 coating exists

It is a real product doing real work; it is just not what the name implies. Typically it is a spray-on SiO₂ sealant applied over a rinsed car in 60–120 minutes, with no decontamination, no correction, no panel wipe, no cure. It genuinely makes water bead and the car genuinely looks better that afternoon.

It will last six to ten weeks in Penang.

Our objection is not to the product. It is to selling it under the same name as a two-day bonded coating and letting the customer believe they have bought three years of protection. If your budget is RM400, a proper decontamination detail at RM280 plus a good sealant will serve you far better than a rushed coating — and it does not lock contamination under a layer you will have to polish off later.

Five questions that expose a cheap job

1. "How many hours will my car be with you?"
   Under six hours: no meaningful correction, no cure. This single question filters most of the market.
2. "Do you measure paint depth before polishing?"
   If not, they are guessing how much clear coat they can safely remove. On a resprayed panel, guessing burns through.
3. "Where does the car cure overnight?"
   Outdoors, under a canopy, or in an open workshop is not a controlled cure. Dust settling into a curing coating is permanent.
4. "Can I see the warranty document?"
   Ask before you pay. A verbal "five years guarantee" with nothing on paper is not a warranty.
5. "Is correction included, and how many stages?"
   The most common route from a low headline price to a high final invoice.

Is expensive always better?

No. There is a ceiling past which you are paying for a brand rather than a result. The things that determine outcome are: how much correction was done, whether the panel was properly wiped before coating, and whether the coating cured in clean, still air. A workshop charging RM4,500 that skips the panel wipe will produce a worse two-year outcome than one charging RM1,800 that does not.

Judge by process, not price. Ask to see a car mid-correction. Any workshop confident in its work will show you.
