Paint protection
Ceramic Coating Penang
A two-layer 9H silica coating applied over properly corrected paint, cured indoors for 24 hours, and backed by a written two-year warranty. The single most cost-effective protection for a Penang daily driver.
Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer, mostly silicon dioxide, that cross-links into a hard transparent film chemically bonded to your clear coat. It is not a wax sitting on top of the paint; it becomes a sacrificial layer that takes the chemical abuse your clear coat would otherwise absorb.
In Penang, that abuse is relentless. Bird droppings at pH 3–4.5, rain carrying dissolved traffic pollutants, salt aerosol along the coast, and a UV index that sits at 11–12 for most of the year. A coating does not make any of that stop — it just means the damage happens to a 3-micron layer we can replace rather than a 40-micron clear coat we cannot.
What you will actually notice
The change most owners comment on is not gloss. It is washing time. A coated car releases dirt so readily that a proper wash drops from 90 minutes to 40, and because you are making far less contact with the paint, you stop putting new swirl marks in every time you clean it. That compounding effect — less contact, fewer defects — is worth more over three years than the initial gloss bump.
The second thing is water behaviour. A fresh coating holds a contact angle around 105–110°, which means water pulls into tight beads and sheets off at speed rather than sitting in flat puddles that evaporate into mineral rings.
Be clear on what it does not do
A ceramic coating will not stop a stone chip. It will not survive an automatic brush wash. It will not hide swirl marks — it will make them more visible, because it adds reflectivity. And "9H" is a pencil-hardness rating on a cured film, not a scratch-proof guarantee. If physical impact protection is what you need, you want paint protection film, and we will tell you so.
Scope of work
What's included
Intake inspection and paint depth mapping
Photographs under LED inspection lighting and paint thickness readings across every panel. If a panel has been resprayed or is running thin, you find out before we quote, not after.
Full chemical decontamination
Snow foam pre-wash, pH-neutral two-bucket wash, iron fallout remover on paint and wheels, then tar and adhesive removal.
Clay bar treatment
Mechanical removal of bonded contaminants the chemicals could not release. Paint should feel like glass before any polisher touches it.
Single-stage machine polish
Test spot first to find the least aggressive pad and compound combination that clears the defects. Included as standard; heavier correction is quoted separately.
Panel wipe
IPA or dedicated panel prep to strip every trace of polishing oil. Skip this and the coating bonds to residue rather than paint — the most common cause of early failure.
Two coating layers
Applied panel by panel under controlled lighting, levelled at the correct flash time for the day's humidity. Second layer after the first has flashed.
Glass and wheel face coating
Windscreen, side glass and the visible face of each wheel coated as part of the package.
24-hour controlled indoor cure
IR lamps in a sealed bay. The car does not leave until the coating has cross-linked properly.
Handover pack and warranty
Before-and-after photos, paint depth readings, written two-year warranty, maintenance schedule, and a booked free inspection at 12 months.
Package comparison
Which ceramic package fits your car
All three include full decontamination and a controlled cure. What changes is the depth of correction and the number of coating layers.
Answers
Ceramic Coating — questions we get asked
How much is ceramic coating in Penang?
RM1,280 to RM3,500 for a professionally applied two-layer 9H coating, depending on vehicle size and how much paint correction the car needs first. A sedan in good condition sits at the bottom of that range; a five-year-old MPV needing two-stage correction sits near the top.
Anything advertised under RM600 is a spray sealant, not a bonded ceramic coating, and will last weeks rather than years. Full breakdown in the Penang price guide.
How long will it last on a car parked outdoors?
Roughly 2 years for a two-layer coating on a car that lives outdoors in Penang, versus 3–4 years for the same coating on a garaged car. UV load and salt aerosol are the two variables that matter most. We measure water contact angle at your free 12-month inspection and top up the sacrificial layer if it has dropped below about 90°.
Can you coat over my existing coating or wax?
No, and any shop that says yes is not preparing the car. Coatings bond to clear coat, not to other products. Existing wax, sealant or a failing old coating has to be polished off completely before the new coating goes on — which is part of why the decontamination and polish stages are non-negotiable in our process.
Is ceramic coating worth it for an older car?
It depends entirely on the state of the clear coat. On a well-kept 8-year-old car, absolutely — the correction alone transforms it and the coating locks that in. On a car with clear coat failure (patchy, peeling or chalky areas), no. Coating over failing clear coat seals a problem you will have to respray anyway. We check for this at inspection and will tell you honestly.
What maintenance does a coated car need?
A pH-neutral hand wash every 2–3 weeks using the two-bucket method, no automatic brush washes ever, prompt removal of bird droppings and sap, and a decontamination wash roughly every 6 months. That is it. The detailed routine is in our ceramic coating maintenance guide.
